vers 3.10 AstroImager
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher - 32-bit AstroImager also controls the set point cooling and the mechanical shutter of the attached camera (if available). It can preview or capture and save images with any count, duration and time lapse, browse captured images, zoom and stretch them automatically or manually, measure FWHM and the drift of a selected star and plate-solve image using public service or local Astrometry for OS X application. Subject: LPI driver for mac Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2005 09:40:54 From: Rodolphe Pineau I found that while looking for something else on the net. It gives a link to a driver that allow the LPI to work on Mac OS X and OS9 Link to the thread : Link to the driver page : Rodolphe -- | Rodolphe Pineau RTI-Zone | | | | Coldfire Robot / Unix / Atari / Astronomy | Mike here: I had to try this out. I downloaded the LPI driver and installed it on a PowerBook G4/500 (TiBook). I also installed Keith's AstroImager software even though the driver software comes with an imager application. I then downloaded and installed Lynkeos, which is a nice stacking application for OS X. Here is a quick report on using the LPI and the stacking software in Mac OS X. I placed the LPI on my ETX-70, connected the LPI to the TiBook, and fired up the driver's "monitor" application. It lets you set some basic video settings and record what the LPI "sees" to a QuickTime movie file. Using this software I verified that the LPI and Macintosh were communicating. Here is a still frame from that movie: I had to manually adjust the exposure setting to avoid overexposing the Moon. I then did a similar capture using Keith's AstroImager application, which is a more full-featured imager. It auto-adjusts the levels (and exposure) so I didn't have to do anything but start recording the image from the LPI to a QuickTime movie. The results were very similar to the driver "monitor" QuickTime file but I suspect that AstroImager will do better on most other objects. I had previously tried Keith's Imager Stacker software but I could never understand some part of making it work. But I found that Lynkeos is much more automated and intuitive. You import your LPI QuickTime file and it can align the frames, measure the "image quality", and throw out frames that are below a user-specified quality level. You can include a "dark frame" and a "flat field" frame if you have them but they are optional. You then tell it to stack the images. You can then do some straightforward image processing if needed (levels, sharpening). Here is a screen shot showing the window. Each frame of the movie file is listed automated on the left. You can manually reject bad frames by clicking the checkbox although in my brief test the automatic quality measurements seemed very accurate (at least for the Moon). It is a pretty simple application to use but I do recommend reading the short Help menu item. I only had one minor problem when doing the stacking: you have to set a crop region but when I would drag the crop rectangle area I would get distorted resulted. It was only by manually setting to a full frame 320x240 would I get a non-distorted image. Here's the result: Bottom line if you have Mac OS X and a Meade LPI: get the driver, AstroImager, and Lynkeos. I will do more work with these once the skies clear up again and report back here. It can be calibrated semi-automatically or manually, you do not need to take care about camera orientation or pixel scale. (OSX) Screen Savers
